Remote Work is NOT JUST Work from Home

FOR SOME REASON, whenever the term "remote work" is thrown out in a conversation, most people automatically imagine someone in a dress shirt and pajama bottoms working from his living room or a stay-at-home mom logging in hours of work between chores.  In fact, if you Google the term "remote worker," you will end up with numerous links about working from home.

Although these scenarios are part of what define remote work, they shouldn’t be used as the absolute definition since the concept is more than that. This can even potentially drive away companies looking for more cost-effective alternatives to hiring locally since not all are too keen on hiring someone who works from home.

Some Clarification is Needed

In my last post, I talked about the difference between the traditional and non-traditional work environment. Remote work falls under the latter, and as I've defined, this involves being paid to provide output outside the usual office environment, i.e., "coffee shops, libraries, and, of course, our very own home."

Some staffing companies push the definition of remote work even further. There are certain remote staffing services that provide remote employees who work out of a different country than their employers. Furthermore, some even have offices where the remote staff can commute to in order to work for their remote employers.

Confused yet? Well, here's a quick Q&A section to clear things up even more:

Are these individuals still considered remote workers? Of course they are.

But didn't I say that remote workers are those who work anywhere BUT at the office? Technically, yes.

The main thing you have to consider is that when I say "office," I mean the physical location where you – the company owner or manager – work. So, if an employee is working at an office that isn't your main headquarters, he is still considered part of your remote team.

Hence, if I were to reword the definition I presented:

Remote work involves employees who you hire to work for your company but operate anywhere else but YOUR office.
